The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program that runs in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). We also teach science, engineering, electronics...and more! We do it all with SMALL class sizes with an adult to student ratio of 6:1. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics irresistibly FUN for the next generation.

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, MD. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

Lego Robotics 1  

GRADES 2–4

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Tuesdays 3:30-4:30pm

Sep 9, 16, 23, 30, Oct 7, 14, 21 (snow day make up Oct 28)

Areas of Exploration: Robotics, Programming, Logic.

Course Structure and Fees: 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $125 per student. Min. 11 / max. 12 students. Parent aide gets free tuition - use special code: PA-Lego

This is our core class in which beginners learn to build and program LEGO® robots using LEGO® Education's award-winning WeDo robotics and programming software. Students follow step-by-step on-screen instructions to build their own robots and a suggested program. Students who are ready can develop more complicated programs involving motion or tilt sensors. In the final class, we take off the training wheels and challenge students to design, build, and program robots that can achieve a certain task.


Lego Robotics 2 *Prerequisite: Lego Robotics 1

GRADES 2–4

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Lego Robotics 2 builds on Lego Robotics 1 by integrating new and more complex projects.  In this course, the directions are not as detailed or step-by-step. The kids are provided with only basic instructions and then challenged to use their imaginations and reasoning to build and program robots. *Prerequisite: Lego Robotics 1


Robo Challenge Machines  
 

 

GRADES 3*–5

Robo Challenge Machines is ideal for students who want more of a challenge than the LEGO® Robotics class offers. No previous robotics experience is required. Instead of working with step-by-step building directions and sample programs, we start each class with a programming challenge set by our instructors. We then use LEGO® robotics kits to design bots to go with our programs. We build catapults, crash-avoidance vehicles, hexbug nano catchers, and more!


Early Engineers

GRADES K–1

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Five- and six-year-olds: we know you’re ready to learn engineering concepts, too! Early Engineers students use LEGO® DUPLO Simple Machines Education kit designed for ages 5+ to learn and explore mechanical concepts by building seesaws, spinning tops, and more.


Let’s Roll! Engineers

GRADES K–1

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Let’s Roll! Engineers students start each class with a story-based challenge and then build vehicular solutions using the LEGO® DUPLO Tech Machines Education kit designed for ages 5+. We also connect each lesson to real-life applications of the concepts covered in class. It won’t be long before your kids start making toy-sized zip-lines for their creations all over your house!

Space Engineers (NEW!)

GRADES 3-5

Students may not repeat this class. Students must be in specified grade range.

Areas of Exploration: Engineering, Physics.

Course Structure and Fees: 1 instructor, 1 aide. Seven 60-min. meetings, once per week. $125 plus $30 materials fee per student. Min. 11 / max. 14 students. Parent aide gets free tuition - use special code: PA-SE 

This class is our SPACE version of Young Engineers. Our projects and activities are designed around challenges that real NASA engineers face, like how to land a rover on Mars without breaking it (not easy--this is the egg drop on steroids!), how to navigate via remote control, and more! Grab your astronaut helmets, since this class will take you OUT of this world!
